Physio after ACL Surgery

Lots of people ask the Cambridge Sports Medicine Centre when they should start physio after ACL surgery.

Our Clinical Director, Matthew Look, recommends that between 7 and 10 days post surgery is the ideal time to start physio after ACL surgery for optimal results. “Taking your physio plan seriously after surgery is by far the best way to make sure you stand a chance of regaining former performance,” he commented. “So it makes sense to plan this in ahead of your operation.”

ACL is major surgery that requires significant rehabilitation if you are to recover fully. Once you start physio after ACL surgery, CSMC recommends the gold standard of weekly sessions for the first couple of weeks, followed by twice a week for between 7 and 8 months. After that, once a week for another couple of months is optimum for a full recovery.

Unfortunately, NHS physio provision is stretched and is very unlikely to provide the level of care required to regain ideal function, even for day-to-day life, so let alone for active people or for those who engage in higher level sport.  If you’re facing ACL surgery in the near future, now is the time to talk to us at Cambridge Sports Medicine Centre. We will take a full history and help you to plan your rehab to give you the best chance at optimal function.
